Peru’s economy is among the most dynamic in South America, but economic success is concentrated along the wealthier coastal regions and the income of the wealthiest 10 percent of Peruvians is 40 times greater than that of the poorest 10 percent. Despite making some advancement in poverty reduction, 36.2 percent of the population lives on less than $2 per day and 12.6 percent on less than $1 per day. Additionally, Peru has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in Latin America. In rural areas, nearly 53 percent of children under the age of five are malnourished. CGSGI’s projects in Peru are addressing these challenges with a focus on enterprise development, health, and child nutrition. Specifically:

Cataract Surgeries Project

In conjunction with Fundación Carlos Slim and the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA), CGSGI is implementing a program to deliver 50,000 cataract surgeries to the most underserved populations of Peru.

Child Nutrition Project

Through a partnership with the Regional Government of Cajamarca, Peru, and five mining companies, this project is delivering nutrition services and micronutrients to more than 5,000 children and 2,000 expectant mothers. The project aims to reduce child malnutrition by 6 percent over a three-year period.

Poverty Reduction Alleviation Project

CGSGI has scaled-up the successful Poverty Reduction and Alleviation (PRA) Program in the Ancash and Cajamarca regions of Peru. This expansion included the continued support of two additional economic services centers (ESC) in Casma and Huari (Ancash) and one in Cajamarca. The ESCs, which provide technical assistance and consulting services, have helped more than 2,000 producers to expand their businesses and access markets.
