What We’ve Accomplished
The Alliance continues to make significant strides, confronting childhood obesity where children play, learn and grow. In each of its four initiatives, the Alliance’s major accomplishments include:
Healthy Schools Program:
- The Healthy Schools Program supports more than 13,000 schools in all 50 states helping to transform their environments into places where physical activity and healthier foods are more available to more than 30 million students before, during and after school.
- The Healthy Schools Program has staff in 38 states working hand in hand with schools and districts to help them make the challenging changes needed to create a healthy place for students to learn and staff to work.
- Initial data shows that the vast majority of schools in the Healthy Schools Program are making policy and program changes that significantly improve their health environments. The longer they work with the program, the more improvements they make.
- Of the schools enrolled in the Healthy Schools Program, 83 percent have implemented the Alliance’s school beverage guidelines, 97 percent offer free drinking water to their students throughout the school day, and 93 percent dedicate at least 50 percent of their physical education time to moderate and vigorous physical activity.
Industry Initiatives:
- Serving as a catalyst for businesses to become a part of the solution for childhood obesity, the Alliance engages with companies from diverse industries that have the ability to improve the access kids and families have to healthcare benefits and healthier foods and beverages.
- With its Healthcare Initiative, launched one year ago, the Alliance has built a coalition of major health insurers, employers and national medical associations to provide children with access to at least four follow up visits with their primary care provider and at least four follow up visits with a registered dietitian each year as a part of their regular health insurance benefits. In February 2010, the Alliance announced that Humana and Accenture have signed onto the initiative, increasing the number of covered lives to more than 1.5 million.
- The Alliance has brokered agreements with the beverage and snack food industries that have changed the landscape in schools. As of September 2008, the Alliance’s beverage agreement had already led to an 88 percent reduction in total beverage calories shipped to 99,000 schools between 2004 and 2009, and nearly 80 percent of district contracts across the nation being aligned to the Alliance School Beverage Guidelines. New information showing even more gains will be released in March, 2010.
