Press Release: Beverage Industry Delivers on Commitment to Remove Regular Soft Drinks in Schools, Driving 88% Decline in Calories

Final Progress Report on agreement with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation shows beverage landscape in schools dramatically changed lower-calorie or smaller-portion beverages now prevalent.

New York – America’s leading beverage companies have delivered on a three-year commitment with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, to remove full-calorie soft drinks from schools across the country and replace them with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverages. As a result of the landmark agreement there has been an 88 percent reduction in calories from beverages shipped to schools since 2004.

Since the creation of the Clinton Foundation Haiti Fund in January, the Fund has raised over $13 million from more than 100,000 individuals for relief, recovery, and reconstruction assistance, and in the month after the disaster has allocated $3 million to a dozen 501(c)3’s on the ground, while also supporting the shipment and delivery of life-saving supplies donated from businesses and other organizations.

The Clinton Foundation Haiti Fund has allocated a total of $3 million to the following organizations on the ground in Haiti:

ACTED, to support emergency assistance as well as provide & deploy over 1,000 shelter and first aid kits.

News: Donations to CBHF by Feb. 28 Can Be Claimed on Your Tax Return

The deadline for taxpayers who want to claim individual donations to nonprofits providing Haiti earthquake relief on their US tax returns is Sunday, February 28.

In January the Internal Revenue Service announced that individuals who itemize deductions to IRS-approved charities – such as the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund – on their tax returns will qualify for this special tax relief provision. To qualify for the tax break, American taxpayers must have made cash contributions after Jan. 11, 2010 and dated no later than February 28, 2010. This includes contributions made online, by text message, check, credit card or debit card. Non-cash contributions, such as supplies, do not qualify.

"President Bill Clinton was released from New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia this morning in excellent health. He warmly thanks the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Hospital for the care he received, particularly Dr. Mark Apfelbaum and Dr. Michael Collins, who performed his procedure yesterday, which was overseen by Dr. Craig Smith and President Clinton’s cardiologist Dr. Allan Schwartz. President Clinton would also like to thank the many people who extended their best wishes to him for a quick recovery. He looks forward in the days ahead to getting back to the work of his Foundation, and to Haiti relief and recovery efforts."

"Today President Bill Clinton was admitted to the Columbia Campus of New York Presbyterian Hospital after feeling discomfort in his chest. Following a visit to his cardiologist, he underwent a procedure to place two stents in one of his coronary arteries. President Clinton is in good spirits, and will continue to focus on the work of his Foundation and Haiti's relief and long-term recovery efforts. In 2004, President Clinton underwent a successful quadruple bypass operation to free four blocked arteries."

Jack Murtha was a true patriot, a good man, and one of the most effective members of Congress. As the first Vietnam combat veteran elected to Congress, he became a champion for all men and women in uniform, and a respected voice in national defense. In 1996, I asked him to co-chair a U.S. delegation to ensure the fairness and openness of the first post-war election in Bosnia. At home, he worked hard to bring jobs, high tech industry, and quality health care to his own district in western Pennsylvania and to people in small towns all over America. I am grateful for his service, his friendship, and his steadfast support for Hillary and me. We loved him and we will miss him. Our prayers are with his wife Joyce, their children and grandchildren and the people of Pennsylvania he so proudly served for 36 years.

President Clinton traveled to Haiti two weeks ago, days after the devastating earthquake, to meet with Haitian and UN officials and deliver relief supplies including water, food, medical supplies, solar flash lights, portable radios, and generators donated by Home Depot, Walmart, and purchased with funds raised by the Clinton Foundation Haiti Earthquake Fund, and to help begin the process of recovery and reconstruction.
